Just nine weeks before Special Counsel Jack Smith charged former President Trump in the case involving the sensitive documents, a representative of President Joe Biden’s legal team met with a senior member of his staff, according to the White House visitor records.
The encounter between Jay Bratt, a key adviser to special counsel Jack Smith, and Caroline Saba, deputy chief of staff for the White House counsel’s office, raises concerns about whether or not the White House interfered with or was politically involved in the DOJ’s investigation of Trump, Joe Biden’s opponent.
According to visitor logs, an FBI agent who worked in the Washington field office named Danielle Ray attended the 10:00 a.m. encounter between Saba and Bratt on March 31, 2023, the New York Post stated.
Nine weeks after that, on June 8, 2023, Smith brought charges against Trump.
The logs don’t say what Saba and Bratt talked about when they met.
Jonathan Turley, a law professor at George Washington University, told the Post that the meeting “raises obvious concerns regarding visits to the White House after Bratt started working for the special counsel.”
“There’s not a reason why the Department of Justice shouldn’t be able to confirm whether or not this meeting was about the ongoing investigation or something else,” he said.
The Post says that approximately two months after having the meeting, Saba quit her job at the White House to go to law school.
Bratt went to Harvard Law School and finished in 2015. Since then, he has been working for the DOJ. He currently serves as the head of the DOJ’s National Security Division’s Counterintelligence and Exporting Control Unit.
In June 2022, Bratt checked out the storage areas at Mar-a-Lago and spoke with Trump. The Washington Post said that he was a big supporter of the FBI raiding Trump’s home.
