In part of an interview with CNN National Security Correspondent Kylie Atwood that aired on Friday’s episode of “CNN News Central,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that, despite President Joe Biden’s warnings not to meddle, “we have seen, generally speaking, evidence of China-based hackers attempting to possibly influence” the 2024 election.
“I would like to question you about a pledge that President Xi reportedly made to President Joe Biden when they met in November,” Atwood inquired. He assured President Biden, as we previously reported, that China will not meddle in the next US presidential election. However, since then, there have been accusations of Chinese internet identities impersonating Trump fans. Are you of the opinion that these reports go against President Xi’s pledge?
Blinken said, “Let me tell you this: President Biden and President Xi were quite explicit about that, and I reiterated that in my discussions today. We are conducting a thorough investigation and consider any interference by China in our elections to be highly unacceptable.
“Look, this is something we are closely monitoring,” he added. I am not privy to these particular reports. I can state that, generally speaking, we have made it very clear to China: do not do it.
“But, as far as you can tell, they are not breaching the pledge yet.” Atwood then inquired.
Again, I would have to look at the exact reports you are referring to, but generally speaking, we have seen indications of attempts to meddle, and we want to ensure that they are cut off as soon as possible, Blinken said in response.
