Citizens of the Lakewood neighborhood in Denver, Colorado, took to social media to express their disapproval of the city council’s decision to urge municipal personnel to meet with the staff of the City of Denver in order to examine the many ways in which Lakewood may collaborate with Denver to address the migrant situation.
In late January, NBC News reported that almost 40,000 migrants had arrived in the city of Denver over the course of the previous year. This made Denver, a city with little more than 710,000 people, the top destination for new migrants who had crossed the southern border of the United States and traveled north of the border in buses. There is an expectation that the immigration problem in Denver will cost a total of $180 million.
At the meeting of the Lakewood City Council that took place on Monday evening, one of the attendees displayed a banner that stated, “It is dishonest to not actively pursue sanctuary status while actively pushing to take tax money to grant shelter to the unhoused.”
Once upon a time, former Councilwoman Mary Janssen made the statement, “We do not want to be Denver.” I am a resident of Lakewood. When did we make the decision to throw away our laws on immigration?
“This transfer area, which is going to turn into a money hole and a large magnet for criminals that is coming across the border, aren’t there enough problems in this city without bringing them in from Denver who are yelling, ‘Yeah, Lakewood, you are stupid enough to accept all of them?” said a male attendee to the council. “This has the potential to become a money pit and a magnet for every criminal that is coming across the border.” If you want to solve our issues, you idiots. This place is a money pit, and you people are the ones who are responsible for our money. Avoid making a mess of it! It’s going to be a money hole from here on out! Do you not have the ability to plan ahead for five minutes? Stop what you’re doing and do us a huge favor. Raise your pathetic rear ends and go out of here.
“Any local resources or time spent on non-citizens unavoidably takes from our infrastructure, human services, schools, and we are doing our bit as federal taxpayers,” a resident said. “We are already doing our part.” Although Colorado Springs has already communicated to Denver, “No migrants,” you are required to do the same.
