This tweet by anti-extremist Imam Walhidi shows us the biggest dilemma in intersectional leftism: what do you do when you have to choose between two “oppressed” groups?
Intersectional politics is the idea that an individual’s opinions are only as valid as how historically oppressed people from their assigned identities are. It places straight white males at the very bottom, but it’s unclear who is at the top. If a traditional Muslim refuses to bake a cake for a same-sex wedding, whose side is the typical liberal on? This is problem with intersectionality and identity politics.
Conservatives don’t have to deal with this, because we view people as individuals. The content of your character matters — your amorphous identity means precisely nothing. We judge opinions based on the weight of the evidence available, not by who deserves to be right.
But let’s remember what really matters to the leftist — loyalty to their orthodoxy. As you can imagine, the imam who published this tweet is absolutely hated by the left, despite his belonging to a group they allegedly defend.
