On MSNBC on Tuesday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi attempted to downplay a recent survey portraying Democrats as losing considerable ground among female independent voters.
According to a recent New York Times/Siena College survey, 49% of potential voters indicated they planned on voting Republican, while 45% said they planned to vote Democrat. The poll also discovered a shift amongst female independent voters, who now support Republicans by 18 points, after supporting Dems. by 14 points in Sept. The polling also discovered that people cared significantly more about the economy over abortion.
“Despite all of the legislative victories, which I want to highlight, I want to say that this has been an extraordinary session, and you and the president have accomplished so much in regards to domestic affairs and the economy.” Why do you believe the president has not yet gotten this message over to the voters?” Andrea Mitchell, the host of MSNBC, inquired.
“First and foremost, let me say that I disagree with most of what you’ve said, that is to say, ‘The New York Times survey, I believe that this is an outlier study, you just mention one poll, whereas all of the other surveys,” Pelosi said before the two continued yelling over each other.
“It’s also true that the ‘RealClearPolitics’ averages show similar difficulties,” Mitchell added.
“No, but all these, nevertheless it was an aberration that pulled the average down. It wasn’t even a large sample size. So I brushed it off. I’ve been in an average of five states per week after Congress adjourned. And I’m able to tell you that women’s concerns about their independence are still quite important in determining how they will vote.”
Pelosi then claimed that abortion is still a hot topic among voters, despite current polling evidence indicating otherwise.
Democratic political Action committees and candidates have spent about $18 million on abortion-related advertisements, despite surveys showing that the economy and inflation are voters’ top worries. According to a July Monmouth University poll, abortion was the most significant thing for only 5% of voters, while inflation was the top problem for 63%.
