Freedom of speech is one of the most celebrated liberties in the United States. The First Amendment was “first” for a reason — it was the primary concern for the new country. Prior to independence, disparaging the monarchy was considered to be treason. Today, criticizing government officials is an American tradition — depending on who is in office.
Free speech laws have been relatively unchanged, but the culture could not be more different. Large tech companies that effectively control our national discourse have a clear bias, and govern their own platforms accordingly. Right-wing voices, or even personalities simply perceived as being right-wing or just not left-wing are often silenced, buried under algorithms, or “shadow banned” on places like Twitter.
We’re living in a world where the New York Times will hire an Asian American woman who is on the record saying horrible things about white people and does precisely nothing about it, but a Jewish American saying “western civilization” is better than any other civilization is basically the return of the Third Reich.
The fact is that liberals and conservatives don’t have the same free speech rights, and that needs to change.
