New York Governor Andrew Cuomo made a big booboo earlier this week during a campaign event when he suggested the United States of America can’t become “great again” because it was never that great to begin with.
The statement, made during a speech to supporters who appeared unsure of how to react to the gaffe, was a swipe at President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again.” According to Cuomo, the slogan is misleading because it suggests America can be restored to something that it never was.
Of course, it didn’t take long for the governor to walk back his statement. In a press release, Cuomo clarified that America really isn’t that bad, and that his statement shouldn’t be taken as being anti-American. In other words, he would really like it if we all just pretended that he never said what he said.
This Freudian slip shows us what we already know — at the core of the Democratic Party’s ideology right now is a deep derision for everything American. The institutions that built this country into what it is today — free markets, freedom of expression, and limited government — are all things modern progressives want to do away with.
Make no mistake: Andrew Cuomo was being perfectly honest about how he feels about the country for the first time in his life.
