There is an old meme we are quite fond of in which a standing audience of mid-20th century Germans are making the Nazi salute while one man stands with his arms crossed in defiance. Usually, the image is presented with a red circle around the one dissenter and some text that suggests he is to be emulated.
Of course, he is to be emulated, and that is what the single standing character in the second frame of this cartoon is doing. This rather famous old cartoon shows us what can happen when one person alone refuses to give the Nazi salute- others follow his example.
This is what we should be doing. Arguably, it is what some of us have been doing. That is why we can have this conversation. If no one had been stubborn and wise enough to show us that we are not to be acting like cattle, then sadly, we would all be acting like cattle.
