This week, people from the San Francisco area showed up at a council meeting to protest a plan for housing nearly one hundred homeless people in a nearby hotel. This caused a lot of chaos.
Hundreds of incensed neighbors from the upscale Millbrae suburb close to the San Francisco airport crowded a meeting to vociferously voice their worries to San Mateo County officials.
San Mateo County has asked the state of California for “Project Homekey” funds, which would be used to turn a 99-room La Quinta hotel in the area into accommodations for homeless people.
“We are worried. We are worried about how this project will go. It’s right in the middle of Millbrae, which is the reason why,” local neighbor Patricia Lam explained to NBC Bay Area.
“Children are very close. It’s across the street from three schools. So we would not like to see this,” said Ho Yeung, a local neighbor.
When county leaders explained the plan, people at the meeting booed and shook their heads, and gave thumbs down. The meeting was recorded, so people can see what happened.
“Shall I finish?” One of the speakers can be clearly heard asking the angry crowd, “What about I finish?”
Some people brought signs to show their disagreement.
“Do not bully Millbrae,” said a sign from one person. “There’s no Homekey!” Another said, “Safety in Millbrae! Keep Our Kids and Elderly Safe,” said another sign.
Even though the room in the community center could hold more than 300 people, the crowd was too big, and a lot of people were trying to hear from outside.
Episcopal Community Services will run the motel if the county is given financing for the homeless initiative. A person from Episcopal Community Services said that they will have staff on hand 24/7 and will also have staff to help people who are homeless with their cases.
San Mateo County Executive Mike Callagy commented, “I think they need to give this thing a chance. Hey, look, we have these places all over the county. They are afraid of crime, acts of violence, and how drugs and mental health affect the neighborhoods. We haven’t seen anything like that.”
Since prior to the pandemic, the number of homeless people living just north of Millbrae in San Francisco has continued to go up.
On any given night, approximately 38,000 individuals in the Bay Area are without homes. That’s 35% more than in 2019. Over 7,000 individuals in San Francisco are living on the streets.
Crime and drug use in public often go hand in hand with the homeless problem. This has caused businesses to leave downtown San Francisco, where there are now fewer people walking around. Due to the dangerous open-air drug markets in the city’s center, many people have started working from home.
Mayor London Breed of San Francisco recently came up with a $692.6 million plan to help the homeless by paying for more shelter places. So far, this plan has not worked.
In March, Breed even asked the federal government for help to deal with crime as well as homelessness. Some parts of the Bay Area have a lot of homeless people and a lot of crime.
Around 500 angry people from Oakland, which is just east of San Francisco, which is located across the bay, showed up to a town hall meeting in May to talk about the city’s high rate of violent crime. They demanded that city leaders do something to stop it. People in Oakland said they were attacked violently in places that were meant to be safe. Online, people shared a lot of videos from the town hall.
These people voted for the current leadership. This, is why good people leave California for better living conditions. Check this out.
