On CBS, Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) said that former President Trump was “a failure of character” and that this is changing the way people think about our country.
A news anchor named Norah O’Donnell stated, “You were once the nominee for the party, but now you’re a joke in the Republican Party.”
Romney replied, “Yes, that is a nice way to say it. Yes, without a doubt. My party isn’t really where I belong. I come from a line of politicians like Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, George W. Bush, and John McCain. People who are against Putin, Russia, authoritarianism, and Kim Jong Un have changed our party. They believe that character matters, that the character of our leaders makes an impact, and that it forms the character of our country. This is not something I see in most of our party today. And that worries me a lot.”
He went on, “Donald Trump is a symbol of character failure, which is, I believe, altering our country’s heart and mind in many ways. And that’s something that can’t be fixed for a long time.”
O’Donnell told him, “The book quotes you as saying that a lot of people in my party don’t really believe in the US Constitution. How did you get to that awful conclusion?”
Romney said, “Republicans cheered when former President Trump declared we should ignore the Constitution and elect him president again. It makes you think, Wait a minute, our party leader is telling us to ignore the Constitution? If that is the case, how can you think that you are following the Constitution?”
