With pro-life legislation sweeping the nation in states like Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and others, leftists and feminists are lamenting the loss of what they try to claim is a constitutional right.
Interestingly, leftists in America never really seem to care too much about constitutional liberties — until they feel that one specific thing they like is threatened. Discourse over the issue has been plagued by constitutionally illiterate claims, so we feel it’s past time to clear some things up.
First of all, abortion is not, and has never been a constitutional right. Thanks to a string of Supreme Court rulings like Roe v. Wade, which is worshipped on the left as the pinnacle of legal thought, abortion is effectively legal. But legal status doesn’t make something a right. For example, you’re allowed to own and drive a car in America — but the dealership isn’t obligated to sell one to you if you crash it during the test drive.
Firearm ownership, on the other hand, is codified in the Second Amendment. While states are allowed to pass their own limitations on this (see the Tenth Amendment), you cannot be denied this right pending certain extreme circumstances.
