Perhaps one of the most annoying and tired arguments promoted by the left on gun control is the idea that the Second Amendment only refers to weapons which existed at the time the Constitution was written.
Of course, there is historical evidence to suggest that the Founding Fathers were fully aware that firearms would eventually progress to the point where they didn’t need to be reloaded after firing just a single musket ball. But, even if they didn’t (which they likely did), that doesn’t change the fact that the rights guaranteed in our founding documents were never meant to change simply because of a few technological innovations.
Take the First Amendment, for example — as the image to the left shows us. Thanks to the internet, individuals are able to communicate instantly — revolutionizing the way ideas are spread and conceptualized. Now, this also allows anonymous trolls to create and spread blatant falsehoods about any given topic, place, or person. Should free speech on the internet be limited simply because it is more effective than parchment paper?
The answer is a definite no. If the left had any interest in being consistent, it would apply this same logic to the entire Constitution — not just the parts they pretend to like when it’s convenient.
