To say that millennials should be careful what they wish for is a criminal understatement.
Throughout history, demands for radical, collective action on a variety of social issues has almost always been co-opted by calls for more government power. And when that happens, it’s usually too late for the would-be freedom fighters.
Take the Soviet Union — which formed in the wake of the fall of what was indeed a repressive state with the Russian Czars. Many of the grievances against the Czars by anarchists, socialists, and liberals of the day were more than justified. The country was going into the 20th century still practicing the feudal tradition of serfdom — the underclass was tied to land owned by an entrenched aristocracy, and had virtually no civil rights to speak of. Sure, Czar Nicholas II attempted to reform this horrendously outdated system, but it wasn’t enough to placate the already radicalized proletariat.
Fast-forward a couple decades, the communist Soviet Union has taken over, and the Czars are a thing of the past. Despite this, the underclass was still living under the boot of authoritarians, and virtually any anti-government sentiment was brutally suppressed.
If you’re wondering what “more government” really looks like, this is almost always it.
