One of the biggest pleasures we get from browsing left-wing pages across the social media sphere is finding gems like this: memes that attempt to construct an alternative economic system, and end up giving us exactly what we already have.
In this meme, which is simply a photo of a handwritten sign (like used during a protest or some other type of demonstration), the content creator suggests that humanity would function in harmony if we just all agreed to grow our own food and exchange it with one another.
This is Adam Smith’s “division of labor” theory in a nutshell. By allowing people to choose their own path and become proficient in their own trade, the exchange of goods and services results in a higher standard of living for everyone involved. Of course, the content here doesn’t address the idea of individuals competing with one another to make the best product at the most affordable price, but that’s a topic for another time.
Leftist critiques aside, capitalism has proven to be the best system for generating and distributing wealth in human history. Even the lower classes in capitalist societies like the United States find themselves far more richer than they would be in more repressive parts of the world.
