The gun control debate has been many things over the past few weeks — consistent has not been one of them.
Take the mainstream liberal argument defending abortions, for example. While most leftist will stop short of admitting they see nothing wrong with terminating an unborn fetus, they contend that criminalizing the practice will simply drive it underground — and make it less safe for those who choose to go through with it.
Now, while we certainly do not endorse the pro-choice position, this argument may hold water when you consider the effect the War on Drugs has had on substance abuse in the United States. Curiously, though, leftists seem to drop this line of reasoning entirely when it comes to firearms.
If the liberal fantasy of a gun-free country were realized, dedicated criminals would simply find alternatives to secure their means of destruction. Whether this means going to the black market to get guns or finding other inventive ways of spreading death (trucks, for example) is irrelevant.
