This is probably not the response the editors over at one of the most popular left-wing news sites expected when they asked their Twitter followers how they felt about President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address.
Likely counting on their diehard fans to universally excoriate the president’s speech, the site’s social media followers did precisely the opposite — overwhelmingly voting to say they reacted very favorably to Trump’s remarks.
Apparently, the rest of the country isn’t far behind. A solid majority of Americans polled following the speech had similar reactions, with even a notably number of Democrats giving a thumbs up.
The speech itself was remarkably centrist in nature. Far from a right-wing rallying cry, President Trump called on Congress to grant amnesty to almost 2 million illegal immigrants and support paid family leave — two items Republicans are known to viciously oppose. The president also voiced support for massive infrastructure spending bill, again breaking from traditional conservative doctrine.
