Democratic Senator Claims the National Anthem is Divisive

President Donald Trump’s first ever State of the Union address did more than simply lay out the Commander-in-Chief’s legislative agenda — it exposed just how far the Democratic Party is willing to go to signal their resistance.

This tweet is one of the most glaring examples.

Penned by Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley, the tweet takes issue with the president making a profoundly neutral claim that the national anthem is a symbol of national pride in America — not exactly a controversial statement.

For reference, the national anthem is traditionally played during various non-political occasions including federal holidays, high-profile sporting events, and in the aftermath of tragic events. According to the Oregon lawmaker, however, this is a divisive tactic meant to offend…well, he didn’t clarify that either.

Merkley’s tweet became famous when it earned a scorching reply from Daily Wire editor Ben Shapiro, who rightly pointed out that sitting the anthem out — as virtually all the Democrats did during Trump’s speech — were the real divisive ones.
