Early in March, Nikki Haley withdrew from the Republican contest for the nomination. However, she unexpectedly garnered 20–25% of the vote in the upper middle class suburbs of Pittsburgh and Philadelphia during the late April GOP primary.
She picked up about 25% of the vote in Tuesday’s primary in Indiana.
This proved to the Biden team that they could win over Haley’s supporters. Trump is reconsidering Haley’s selection as his running mate, whether or not that is a mirage. He has not gotten in touch with her yet. However, Haley will be present at a donor conference the following week, where it is quite likely that the topic of Haley supporting Trump will come up.
An alliance would seem impossible given their shared need for oil and water. However, unusual bedfellows in politics have happened before, and the truth is that Trump needs Nikki Haley in a number of ways.
Haley’s continued appeal to wealthy, well-educated suburban voters might have a significant impact not only in Pennsylvania but also in Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin.
More significantly, Trump is well behind Joe Biden in terms of funding. In order to compete with Biden, he needs those donation funds from Haley, given his precarious financial situation.
However, it might not even be essential to select Haley as a running partner.
“Many of these voters will return home before November, but he controls his own destiny,” stated Haley’s backer and former Indiana GOP state representative Mike Murphy. “These folks are going to remain disgusted with him if he continues to make an ass of himself, get convicted, and fu** up more in court.”
It will not work to ask Trump to behave himself in order to convince Haley to vote “yes” for vice president.
If the two ever got together, it would also be an awkward marriage because they disagree so much on a number of matters.
However, Trump’s persistent underperformance in the suburbs is unsettling. It makes former Haley aides happy to speak out.
Trump’s increasing support from minorities will probably counteract some of his suburban slide. However, the potential Trump supporters in the suburbs are far greater than the voters in the Hispanic and Black communities.
Politics:
“Because swing counties and states are so critical to winning the election, Haley voters will be vital to Trump and Biden in November.” Given anonymity to candidly evaluate the campaign, a Republican strategist who backed Haley’s candidacy stated, “I think the Trump world should do all they can to get them.” The strategist claimed that Biden had his own shortcomings with voters and called Trump and his campaign “denialists” for “not doing anything” to win over Haley backers. The Trump campaign is “building a historic and unified political movement to make America great again,” according to spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt. She cited Trump’s high approval rating among Republicans as well as his gains with “longtime Democratic constituencies such as African Americans, Hispanic Americans, and union workers.”
For Trump to advertise, money is not required. He is getting all the exposure he needs from the news networks. In order to mount a successful campaign, he needs money to establish the organization, do opposition research, finance rallies, and recruit personnel.
Haley may lend a hand with that task. However, her burdensome baggage could be too much to aid Trump in winning the election.
UPDATED:
Trump has rejected the idea that Haley could be his vice president.
“I wish Nikki Haley well, but she is not being considered for the V.P. seat.” Trump sent a message on his Truth Social page.
Trump left the door open, but other than that, nothing has changed. “Wishing her well” differs significantly from referring to her as a namesake and making assumptions about her birthplace.
