Just when you think we’ve reached peak California, stuff like this happens.
Not long ago, reports surfaced that people in California will soon have to pay a tax on the number of text messages they send. That’s right — the great state of California is basically punishing people for simply talking to each other. The fact that there hasn’t yet been an Old Testament-style exodus from the state is nothing short of a miracle.
To be fair, many people are leaving California in droves — usually heading for places without any state income taxes like Florida and Texas. You would think that this would send a message to policymakers there. Apparently people don’t like being taxed to death — even the liberal types that everyone thinks about whenever California is brought up in conversation. Basically everyone wants to believe that they can keep at least most of their own money.
The image to the left, taken from the Spongebob Squarepants cartoon, seems like a joke now — but we’re getting closer and closer to the point where it isn’t.
