Social media is probably the most innovative and influential invention to come out of the modern age. Platforms like Facebook and Twitter have given voices to the voiceless, and power to the powerless. The impact of this cultural juggernaut cannot be understated.
But this has become a double-edged sword. While social media platforms like Twitter can indeed be empowering, they can also be just as suppressive as any tinpot dictator. Twitter’s Jack Dorsey basically admitted this during his sit-down with journalist Tim Pool on the Joe Rogan podcast.
Dorsey even admitted that conservative voices tend to receive harsher penalties than liberal accounts — and more often. This goes beyond Dorsey’s personal bias — which is left-leaning — but the entire culture that is Twitter and social media at large.
Often times, conservative Twitter users don’t even know they’ve been banned or muted. Instead, they receive “shadow bans”, which essentially prevent other users from seeing their content.
