By now, there’s no doubt that you’ve heard about the big news that’s deeply important and is the best thing ever: Disney is doing a live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, and the actress portraying the titular character is a black woman.
That’s right, everyone: sexism and racism have been permanently defeated. The evil patriarchy will never be able to recover from this stunning act of bravery and inclusivity. President Donald Trump is going to step down any minute now and become transgender. Thanks, Disney!
Now, if you’re like 90 percent of the American population, you saw this on your social media feed and scrolled past it without thinking too much about it. Because, why wouldn’t corporate media do something like that in 2019? Why should this take up too much of your mental energy?
If you’re like us, you were left wondering when Hollywood will simply come up with new ideas, rather than remaking old titles in the image of intersectionality. But, this is far from the first offense. Anything and everything that is considered “too white” by progressives will get the same makeover. So, who cares?
We expect that, if the situation was reversed, it would be received a bit differently…
