It’s pretty incredible to see people making excuses for millionaires and billionaires, but here it is coming from left field.
According to this image, posted to Reddit’s ‘Advice Animals’ forum (which normally avoids political topics), Hollywood film producer and alleged sex offender Harvey Weinstein was able to get away with his transgressions against young actresses because of “wage slavery”: a Marxist concept based on the idea that employers exploit their employees.
Now, it’s true that young up-and-coming starlets would likely be easier to abuse due to their ambitiouns and naivety. However, this doesn’t really add up considering comedians were joking about Weinstein’s behavior as far back as the early 2000s. No one was stopping Kate Beckinsale from outting the producer after she and others became household names.
The sad truth is that Hollywood’s corrupt culture, not systemic “wage slavery”, is to blame for Weinstein to continue living this crude lifestyle unchecked. The “casting couch” became a meme (and a fetish) for a reason. It’s well-known that young starlets often put themselves in compromising situations to advance their career, while their prospective employers are happy to take advantage of them.
Fixing the problem in Hollywood is dependent on two things. First, the actors, actresses, producers and everyone else working in the industry likely knows others besides Weinstein who behave the same way. They need to out them now, and name names. Second, it’s lost past time for Hollywood to lose its monopolistic hold on American film culture. Individual states and businesses should invest in their own franchises to compete with Hollywood. Maybe filmgoers will finally catch a break from endless sequels and remakes as a result.
