It was once understood that Republicans, Democrats, independents, and everyone else in-between had good intentions, but simply understood the world differently. My oh my…have things changed.
In increasingly popular leftist circles, it is no longer acceptable to even entertain the idea that Republicans might be right about something. Many colleges and universities have effectively criminalized conservative thought by banning public speaking events by performers who are by all means well within the mainstream right. Many Americans are simply no longer allowed to have their own opinion anymore.
Do you believe the welfare state is poorly managed, and possibly causes more harm than good by creating a culture of dependency? You’re a racist. Do you have a problem with how easy it is for men’s reputation to be destroyed simply by being accused of sexual misconduct? You’re a sexist. Does the idea that one’s gender can be changed at will depending on how one feels on a given day confuse you? Well, you’re just a bigot.
Debate is essential for discourse, and sometimes debates are uncomfortable. This is fine. It should be uncomfortable from time to time. Unfortunately, too many are unwilling to step out of their comfort zone and accept that there is more than one way to understand the world around you.
