Former Vice President Joe Biden’s presidential campaign is looking more like a Halloween costume every day.
Between adjusting his dentures in the middle of a debate, to forgetting that New Hampshire and Vermont are not in fact the same thing, and to choosing “truth over facts,” the Biden campaign has been going no where fast. To be fair, Biden does often enjoy a strong lead in the polls against his fellow Democrats, but that just demonstrates just how embarrassingly weak the Democratic field is this election cycle.
Perhaps things would have looked different during a normal election year, but there are no more “normal election years.” The game has changed completely. Some of us like to credit that to President Donald Trump, whose unconventional antics (as seen on his Twitter account) completely flipped the script. But, the truth is that it didn’t start there. The idea of a presidential campaign being won completely by a media blitz started with Trump’s predecessor, Barack Obama.
The Obama campaign, with the help of the mainstream media, gave us the image of a messianic figure that was going to usher in an era of post-partisan politics. This wasn’t even close to the truth, but it did shatter expectations of how just important having a television personality was for presidential politics.
The Biden campaign cannot and will not adjust to the times, and that’s why it looks like a dead candidacy already.
