Women have it pretty good in the west. In fact, North America, Western Europe, and other cultures influenced by them are the best places to be gay, a racial minority, or really any identity at all. That’s because these cultures are the result of Enlightenment Era liberalism — not to be confused with Cultural Marxism that characterizes the left today.
In places like Iran, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and many other countries in the Middle East and elsewhere, Enlightenment values such as free speech, political participation, and gender equality are quite literally foreign concepts. Roughly 90 percent of people living in Afghanistan still believe that honor killings — that is when a man decides to murder his wife for one reason or another — are perfectly acceptable.
These are countries that actually need feminism — the feminism that rocked the western world in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This was a time when the treatment of men and women by societal institutions was observable unequal. Just about all of these disparities have been remedied today. The same cannot be said for cultures governed by fundamentalist ideologies like Sharia Law.
