Based on previously disclosed statistics, the Gothamist stated that the great majority of immigrants living in NY City are refusing to move, even though they are provided free tickets on taxpayer-funded buses and airplanes.
In September, the city started limiting adult immigrant shelter stays to 30 days. After their allotted time in the city is up, they are sent to a reticketing office, where they may either get a free ticket to depart town or reapply for a shelter place. Just 2 percent of individuals who were offered a bus or airplane ticket chose to move, according to The Gothamist.
At one of the city’s reticketing locations, St. Brigid’s, the queue frequently stretches around the building, and only approximately 15 percent of the 1,600 migrants who come through the door each day are able to get a place to stay for the night. Every day, between 800 and 2,800 migrants come to St. Brigid’s; many are returnees who were unable to find lodging on their first visit.
Based on the data examined by the news site, the city’s overcrowded shelter system is turning away eighty percent of immigrants. If an immigrant is unable to obtain a place to stay, they are added to a waiting list.
The city should give the migrants “genuine case management so they can obtain what they need to go on,” according to Joshua Goldfein, a staff attorney with the charity Legal Aid Society, who spoke with the Gothamist.
“It is disruptive and unhelpful to use an artificial deadline for individuals to have to leave refuge,” Goldfein argued.
“We’re laser-focused on employing rigorous case management, reticketing, and legal support to help more individuals move out of shelter as they seek more self-sufficient lifestyles,” Kayla Mamelak, a spokesman for Democratic Mayor of New York City Eric Adams, said to the news source.
“We need additional help, even if we are appreciative of what our federal partners have given us so far,” she continued.
Some areas of New York, Texas, Florida, Illinois, Colorado, Georgia, Minnesota, Virginia, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania are among the popular destinations for the thirty individuals who choose to leave the city each day using the free, taxpayer-funded ticket, according to Mamelak.
About 113,000 immigrants, or 60% of the total, have departed the city’s shelter system and “taken the next steps in their journeys,” according to Mamelak.
“Finish the job they started by giving more asylum seekers with hastened work authorization, sending additional monetary support to NY City, and implementing a total decompression and resettlement strategy,” she told the New York Post, referring to the Biden administration’s obligation to the city.
The Post stated that the Adams administration is spending almost $387 per day on each immigrant, according to recently published city hall figures.
“In the past two months, Mayor Adams has spoken of strategies to save billions in taxpayer dollars as NY City manages a humanitarian catastrophe, and the figures demonstrate that our efforts are succeeding,” a spokesman for Adams told the news site.
The representative stated, “By next summer, we hope to save $2.3 billion.”
