Republicans in the California Assembly are complaining that a genuinely awful bill is being hurried through the Public Safety Committee and is currently on the agenda. AB 2031 would allow legal aid organizations receiving government funding to cover the cost of representing illegal immigrants with criminal records. Regretfully, this is typical for California.
And tucked away at the bottom of this bill is this unsettling language:
“Under the bill, personally identifiable information that the department collects in connection with the services mentioned above would not be considered a public record, and the department would not be permitted to disclose it, with the exception of situations in which compliance with a subpoena, warrant, or court order is required.”
“A legislation that restricts access to public body meetings or the writings of public officials and agencies must be approved with findings that demonstrate the interest protected by the limitation and the need for safeguarding that interest,” according to existing constitutional requirements.
In essence, this would permit Immigration and Naturalization to prevent law enforcement and other relevant parties from becoming aware of the violent prior actions of undocumented immigrants and from responding accordingly. The state is extending yet another open invitation for more people to pour into our borders and then easily carry out violent and deadly crimes, such as the terrible murder of Laken Riley in Athens, Georgia.
It would seem that California lawmakers would be considering measures to at least prevent dangerous and criminal criminals from entering the state from San Diego, in addition to cautiously continuing with their already vocal support of illegal immigrants. However, it seems that they have not learned anything from the illegal alien’s 2016 murder of Kate Steinle in San Francisco, which eventually contributed to Donald Trump’s election to the presidency. The 2022 killings of three children by their father, an illegal alien, occurred even more recently.
As early as 2018, it was known that David Fidel Mora-Rojas was an undocumented immigrant who had overstayed his visa. The California Values Act, which shields criminal illegals from being reported to the police and turned over, allowed Mora-Rojas to be housed in a Sacramento church. In February 2022, Mora-Rojas was taken into custody for driving while intoxicated, attacking a peace officer, and subsequently attacking medical personnel. With his wife, three kids, and chaperone inside the chapel, he opened fire in March 2022 after obtaining an AR-15. After the chaperone and all three kids perished, Mora-Rojas turned the pistol on himself.
These are only two examples out of many where California already fails to safeguard its legitimate people while giving illegal criminals preferential treatment. The California government now seeks to have taxpayers foot the bill for criminal foreigners’ legal defense by codifying this carelessness into law.
Democrat Assemblyman Reggie Jones-Sawyer, the bill’s author, is a big believer in social justice and uncovering bigotry everywhere. Being the chair of both the Public Safety and Reparatory Justice Committees, Jones-Sawyer is notorious for pushing legislation that benefits and pardons offenders based on their race or immigration status while opposing bills that mandate felony enhancements, such as those for those who possess and distribute fentanyl. Jones-Sawyer’s most recent attempt to obstruct was the 2023 measure that would have made child trafficking a state crime. Governor Gavin Newsom, of all people, put pressure on lawmakers to advance the bill out of committee, where it eventually passed and became law. Thanks, but no, to Jones-Sawyer and his devoted Democratic henchmen.
Every Californian should raise a fuss and contact their Senate and Assembly representatives to defeat AB 2031 before it even gets to the Public Safety Committee on Tuesday. It is only wrong to provide government funds to unlawful criminals like Kate Steinle and Laken Riley for their defense of their actions when it could have saved their deaths.
