Sixth graders will participate in a book reading event hosted by the LA Unified School District (LAUSD) that will affirm “non-binary and transgender children.”
The virtual reading event is a part of “LA Unified’s second annual observance of the Jazz & Friends National Day of Community and School Readings,” which will take place on February 16 in the morning.
The Human Rights Coalition, a pro-transgender advocacy organization, spearheads the National Day of Reading, which is dedicated to Jazz Jennings, a man that “knew that he had a girl’s brain inside a boy’s body” since he was two years old. According to an Amazon synopsis, Jennings has now “become a spokesperson for transkids everywhere.”
Students will hear a reading of the book Red, which is about a blue crayon who is told by his family and friends that he is really a red crayon, during the event.
The book is a part of the HRC’s organizing toolkit for the National Day of Reading, which aims to promote “a celebration of stories that support transgender and non-binary kids.” Other books are also included in the toolkit, like “When Aidan Became a Brother,” which is about a young girl who considers herself to be a guy. What Does It really Mean to Be Transgender? is included as a discussion question for the book.
In the meantime, one activity’s instructions ask, “What names would you pick to choose from for a new baby? Many names come to mind when we think of boy names and girl names, but such categories don’t include all the possible gender identities. Make a list of potential names for a child, who may turn out to be a boy, girl, both, or neither.”
According to the summary, “When Aidan Became a Brother is a touching book that will connect with transgender kids.”
The LAUSD collaborated with an organization called Open Books, formerly known as Gender Nation, to encourage transgenderism among its kids, according to prior media reports. The organization donates books that support kid transgenderism to public schools in an effort to “affirm children with LGBTQ+ narrative.”
