Vice President Kamala Harris came to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School for a “photo op” visit, but the father of one of the victims of the horrifying Parkland school massacre criticized her for trying to “promote an agenda.”
On Saturday, Vice President Harris made an appearance at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Utilizing the terrifying scene of the serial shooter-ravaged school as a background, Harris announced two gun control initiatives crafted by the Biden administration.
The institution seems to be “stuck in time,” according to Harris. The gruesome school building still has gunshot holes in its walls, shoes that children ran away leaving behind, and flooring smeared with blood from the 17 injured victims and the dead.
Harris praised the Department of Justice under President Joe Biden’s newly established National Extreme Risk Protection Order Resource Center. The newly established organization will provide training to state and local officials on how to implement red flag legislation and seize guns from gun owners who pose a risk to themselves or others. Conservatives criticized the newly established center, which aims to strengthen red flag rules that take guns away from dangerous gun owners, as Blaze News reported on Saturday.
In addition, Harris extolled the virtues of the Biden administration’s $750 million grant program, which offers training and technical support to the District of Columbia and the 21 states that have passed red flag laws.
“The Biden-Harris Administration made $750 million in federal money to execute state crisis intervention programs, which include mental health courts, drug courts, veteran treatment courts, and red flag programs,” reads the news statement from the White House.
The Associated Press adds that Harris “also called on Congress and states lacking red flag legislation to adopt them.”
Red flag regulations, as critics have noted, give the government the authority to seize guns from lawful gun owners without following the proper procedures.
At Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on February 14, 2018, a mass shooter killed 17 people. Alaina Petty, 14, was one of the worst victims of the horrific Parkland school massacre.
Alaina Petty’s father, Ryan Petty, took issue with Harris using the school to “promote an agenda.”
“Nothing short of additional gun regulation was going to satisfy them in defending our nation’s schools,” Petty said on Fox News, quoting the vice president and the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention. To those of us who have been working for the past six years to attempt to safeguard our country’s schools, that is just a smack in the face.”
“There exist other approaches to safeguarding our children and educators in educational institutions that do not necessitate violating the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding gun owners nationwide,” Petty continued. “However, none of those suggestions are welcome from the vice president or the Office of Gun Violence Prevention. What they want to do is give the vice president a platform to preach about gun control in a location that is now, quite simply, sacred.”
“What frustrates me is that this building should have been demolished years ago, and it’s now being exploited as a photo op by politicians that want to advance an agenda,” the devastated parent exclaimed.
Government representatives have made several trips to the scene of the school shooting atrocity in recent months.
According to the AP, “Since law enforcement restored ownership of the facility to the school system last summer, a number of members of Congress, primarily Democrats, have visited it, including Education Secretary Miguel Cardona, who gave a tour of it in January. Recent visitors to the facility included FBI Director Christopher Wray and Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle.”
But politicians, quite honestly, don’t know what it takes to safeguard our country’s educational system,” Petty went on. They are unaware of the reasons behind the Parkland tragedy. They are only there to further their objective of gun control; they have no idea what caused the tragedy. I’m over it. It must end. It is necessary to dismantle the structure.”
