Contrary to what virtually any progressive in America will tell you, the United States has one of the most liberal immigration policies in the entire world. In fact, a laissez-faire attitude about immigration has been common throughout American history. During the early 20th century, all you had to do was prove that you didn’t have some horrific disease and were not a terrorist. That was it.
Obviously, standards have changed since then, and rightfully so. In America’s early days, there was little to no welfare state to speak of. This meant that the only reason people had to come to America was to build a new life from the ground up. It was because of this policy that America became known as the “land of opportunity”.
Despite these changes, America’s immigration laws remain pretty lax — especially when compared with countries like Japan, South Korea — or even Mexico for that matter. This is why it’s so ironic that the Mexican government refuses to cooperate with the Trump Administration to tackle the immigration problem plaguing both countries.
