NY City Mayor Eric Adams canceled his weekend trip to the southern border, mentioning “safety concerns” at one of his planned stops.
According to municipal officials, the US State Department singled out one of the areas in Mexico.
To discuss how to tackle the migrant crisis, Adams had arranged a conference in Mexico with Sister Norma Pimentel, the director of Catholic Charities in the Rio Grande, and other officials.
He made the announcement about the journey to the Texas-Mexico border after a large group of migrants scaled a border wall in El Paso on Thursday.
On a radio broadcast, Adams first revealed his plans to meet with federal immigration officers. Which city is in peril is unknown at this time, though.
City Hall’s whole statement is as follows:
“More than 184,000 migrants have entered our city seeking care since the spring of 2022, and because of our diligent effort, more than 120,000 of them have already been able to advance in their quest for self-sufficiency. Collaboration throughout the nation is necessary to find answers to national problems. Sister Norma Pimentel, the executive director of Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande and a well-known humanitarian around the world, saw our efforts and extended an invitation for us to meet with her and her team at the southern border. For this, we are humbled and thankful. Our team was eager to talk about our work in NY City and look at new ways to work with leaders around the country as Lent draws to a close. However, due to safety issues at one of these cities we were scheduled to visit in Mexico that the U.S. Department of State had flagged, we have decided to cancel this visit at this time. Our team was excited to stand beside leaders who have dedicated their lives to serving the needy among us. We intend to keep working together with these nationally renowned Latino leaders and groups as we search for practical ways to address the border situation.”
It would have been the latest attempt by City Hall to draw national focus to the financial burden that the migrant surge has imposed on New York City, therefore increasing pressure on the Biden White House to take action.
When Adams last postponed a trip, it was in November, just after he learned that the FBI had raided his main fundraiser’s Brooklyn home as part of a continuing probe into his mayoral campaign for 2021. In Washington, DC, Adams had called off his meeting with White House representatives over the immigration problem.
About 185,000 migrants have showed up in NY City since the spring of 2022; of those, about 65,000 are under the city’s care.
They called themselves a Santuary city as long as the illegals stayed in the border states but when the started showing up in NYC, where they just got a very small sample of what the border states were having to put up with ever since Biden took office, they have changed their minds. What would happen if a million or more showed up in NYC? Would they still be trying to blame Trump instead of the person that is actually responsible, Biden? Probably.
