This is a bit of a throwback — at least for everyone who vaguely remembers the 1980s.
In the middle of March, high school students around the country participated in the highly anticipated “national walkout” — which was billed by organizers as a non-partisan show of solidarity with the victims of February’s school shooting in Parkland, Florida.
Not surprisingly, demonstrations were hardly apolitical, with scores of students showing up sporting anti-Second Amendment signs. Progressive politicians like Bernie Sanders also made appearances, completely dispelling the facade that this was anything but a political event.
This meme, which references the 1986 hit “Fight for Your Right (to Party)” by the Beastie Boys, highlights the profound differences between youth movements in the past and in the modern age. While teens would once protest for more respect for civil rights, they are now effectively imploring the federal government to take them away by advocating for a virtual repeal of the Second Amendment.
This just goes to prove what we’ve been arguing here for a long time — conservatism is the new counter-culture.
