Every reader is urged to start “decolonizing your bookshelf,” National Public Radio (NPR) tweeted on Saturday.
White voices have predominated the canon for centuries, claims NPR. The public broadcaster suggests that fans start “decolonizing your bookshelf” by deleting titles by white authors.
The aim of “decolonizing your bookshelf,” according to NPR, is to “actively resist and cast aside the colonialist ideas of narratives, storytelling, and literature that have dominated the American way of life for so long.”
They contend:
“If you are white, have a look at your bookcase. What do you notice? What authors and books have influenced your viewpoint, and how do you deal with prejudice and racial discrimination toward the disenfranchised? Have you ever considered that if you classify as white and solely read literary works of white writers, you are, in certain respects, listening to a repeat of your own voice? While the specifics and depth of experience may vary, white voices have always dominated what is considered canon.”
The Daily Beast described the burning of books as “possibly the most ancient form of censorship” on April 14, 2017.
According to the Daily Beast, “When the Babylonians and their partners sacked the Assyrian city of Nineveh in 612 BC, they burned the book collection of the scholarly King Ashurbanipal. On May 10, 1933, Nazi youth organizations burnt approximately 25,000 “degenerate” books at a huge bonfire in Berlin, involving broadcasts on the radio publicizing the event for those who were unable to attend in person. Books by Albert Einstein, Helen Keller, Bertolt Brecht, Sigmund Freud, Karl Marx, Ernest Hemingway, Thomas Mann, and H.G. Wells were set ablaze.”

If white literature and culture is so terrible, then why aren’t movies being made from literature originating in non-white countries? Instead they are remaking movies and recasting leads with non-white actors.

I can’t believe, that they are suggesting we destroy our personal books (decolonizing) because the authors might influence our white decisions.

What a bunch of crap. I don’t even know the color of the authors of the books in my bookshelf, and further, don’t care. NPR has crossed completely over the bpoundry of sanity on this one. I will no longer listen or watch NPR. IDIOTS!!!!!!!!!!!

The only reason they act like that is because the fighting men of this country have made if safe enough to be worried about inanimate objects! NPR sounds a lot like the folks in charge in 1930’s Germany. I wonder what they hope to accomplish.
When NPR began, I loved it. They presented thoughtful ideas and then had folks from the left and the right comment. You got a nice clear picture from which you could decide. Then….in one day, they fired all commentators that spoke from the right side of issues. So, I de-programmed my radio and ignore them. They have now proven they are worth ignoring.
Where are all the “people of color” on NPR? Hypocrites! Pull ALL their taxpayer funding!
It’s time to defund these clowns! Call your congressman or congresswoman.
I see another Bud Light moment on the horizon. If all white people stop donations and contact their State Representative demanding they cut off funding you will see some action.
NPR should lead the way by firing all it’s white employees.
What ever happened to the NPR I grew up with? How about this. Keep your books and “add” books that have another perspective or viewpoint to consider. This is the correct way to understanding each other. Not by stopping the flow of ideas but by welcoming more ideas from a diverse source. People keep going to the extreme in every solution. This is ridiculous and I am black!
