No, ‘Trump Rednecks’ Aren’t Losing Their Welfare — They Don’t Need it

There are many things wrong with this picture, the least of which being the characterization of all Trump supporters as “rednecks”.

Seeing as how the word “redneck” refers to rural individuals living in the American south, this meme already loses its credibility. While President Donald Trump is certainly popular in this region, the bulk of his support during the 2016 primary season actually came from northeastern and Rust Belt states — which typically vote blue.

Now, let’s move on to food stamps, which this meme suggests the president is stealing from the very people who elected him. It’s true that food stamp usage has fallen every month since President Trump took office, but that’s not because of any cuts — Congress has yet to act on any major legislation, let alone welfare reform.

As the nation’s food stamp usage has fallen, so has the unemployment rate — an easy indication that a pro-jobs agenda works in reducing reliance on government assistance.

If there’s any lesson to be learned here, it’s a lesson America has learned already: government assistance disincentives economic growth. As Ronald Reagan once put it, the best social program is a job.
