New Warzone: America’s Northern Border Turns Ruthless

According to a recent New York Post story, human smuggling groups have established sophisticated operations to transport people into the US via the open border with Canada.

Cartels involved in smuggling operations have been escorting migrants arriving in Canada by plane over unattended and unwalled sections of the border into the United States, notwithstanding vigilance over migrant crossings into the country via the international border with Mexico. According to the Post, the size of the operation’s infiltration has alarmed border community inhabitants.

Chris Feeley, a citizen of Swanton, Vermont, which is less than ten miles from the Canadian border, told the Post, “The Border Patrol actually said, ‘You guys might want to keep a pistol with you’ because nine out of ten of them are here for good reasons, but there is always that one guy that has a criminal record. “When I call, the receptionists recognize me…I say, “hi, I had some more just go by my camera if you want to send the lads up there,” and they say, “Oh, hi, Chris, how’s it going?”

According to the Post, 12,200 foreigners crossed the northern border into the US illegally in 2023—a 240% increase over 2022. Seventy percent of those people crossed in the Swanton Area, a 295-mile border region to the north of the town.

According to the Post, locals indicate that they have seen suspected foreign individuals of Hispanic and Latino origin strolling through the wooded regions around Swanton while holding their phones in a way that suggests they were tracing a path to enter the nation as pedestrians. Eventually, cars bearing license plates from outside Vermont pick them up and transport the migrants into the interior.

“It’s obvious they’re a getaway automobile once you see the NJ license plates. Kaitlynn Pease, a citizen of Vermont, a peninsular village on Lake Champlain administratively accessible to the U.S. only via bridge, told the Post that NJ and Massachusetts had been the major states sending people to pick up migrants recently. When there isn’t any traffic early in the morning, they are there. Usually, it is between six and seven in the morning.”

Pease works as an assistant manager at the Jolly Quick Stop gas station, which has served as a meeting place for migrant encounters, according to the Post.

In addition, traffickers of migrants have developed a skill at identifying the locations of US Border Patrol officials in order to evade capture. “They nearly never get their personal automobiles taken because they almost always have rented cars in case they get caught. Typically, they drive two automobiles. According to Louis, a Highgate Center, Vermont, resident, “They drive by to scout out the area to find out where Border Patrol are.” He told the Post.

Louis said, “The lead car travels ahead as the scout, and the back car stops to pick up the illegals.”

According to the Safe Third Country Agreement between the US and Canada, foreign persons seeking asylum must do so in the nation where they initially arrived, either the US or Canada. Federal law gives the U.S. Border Patrol the authority to apprehend and hold foreign people who are in the country illegally anywhere up to 100 miles from an external border.

But after passing through the Swanton Sector, a large number of migrants manage to evade capture. Pease said, “Border Patrol isn’t generally around.”
