Liberalism is Too Lenient for the Modern Left

The cartoonist responsible for this image is probably unaware of it, but this is a perfect illustration of everything wrong with the modern regressive left emerging in the United States and around the world.

Editorially, this cartoon doesn’t really break new ground. Taking an absolutist view of free speech, in the content creator’s view, essentially platforms fascists who will turn around and repress your own freedoms for the rest of time. Basically, this follows the whole “punching Nazis is okay” trend.

But, instead of picking on conservatives, the title at the top suggests that the cartoonist is actually taking issue with liberals sticking to their values.

It might seem hard to remember now, but there was a time when liberals were stalwart defenders of the First Amendment. However, this is apparently too permissive for the increasingly militant left.

It is imperative for centrist and liberals to recall their roots in American discourse. In order for America to truly call itself a marketplace for ideas, it must allow for even the most despicable voices to be heard, so long as they’re not impeding on the rights of anyone else. This is how malicious ideologies are discredited — through open debate and discussion. Censorship only drives these conversations underground.
