The New York Times has acknowledged the widespread and enduring harm that COVID-19 lockdowns have caused to students’ education.
The New York Times released a fresh report on Monday, four years after legislators closed schools, acknowledging that there is “wide consensus among many public health and education professionals” that closing schools caused severe harm to students even if it did not stop the COVID-19 virus from spreading.
Based on the latest information on pandemic learning loss, the Times came to many conclusions about why closing schools was a terrible idea.
First, the Times discovered that students who were forced to participate in remote or hybrid “learning” and were kept out of class longer experienced more academic regression than those who were allowed to return to class early. Regaining such academic losses has proven to be nearly impossible.
As reported in the Times:
“According to the most current exam results from spring 2023, pupils have not quite recovered from their pandemic losses, with greater disparities still existing among those who initially lost the most ground. In comparison to kids in districts that let them return for the majority of the year, students in those who remained remote or hybrid for the longest—at least 90% of the 2020–21 school year—still had nearly twice as much distance to make up.”
Second, the so-called “newspaper of record” discovered that learners from lower socioeconomic backgrounds had more severe learning deficits than those from wealthier backgrounds.
The Times said, “That is important since poor districts were also more likely to stay isolated for longer,” elaborating on how the majority of the nation’s impoverished school districts are found in Democrat-controlled cities that responded to the outbreak with harsh measures.
Third, the Times discovered that pupils still experienced learning loss and other serious issues during brief school closures.
“Students’ anxiety and behavioral outbursts are on the rise in many schools. Furthermore, chronic absence from school has increased across all demographic categories, according to the Times. Experts say there are indications that the epidemic, and even temporary closures, had long-lasting consequences on the educational culture.”
The worst part is that lawmakers exposed youngsters to these risks in spite of the overwhelming absence of data demonstrating that closing schools prevented the spread of COVID-19.
Regretfully, the Times only skirted the right historical conclusion about school lockdowns.
Some schools returned by autumn 2020, mostly in rural and Republican-led states. Others might not completely reopen for another year, usually in major cities and Democratic-led states, according to the publication.
According to the statistics in the paper, this really shows that although Democrat-controlled states made mistakes due to pressure from corporate media, teachers unions, and “experts,” Republican-controlled states managed the pandemic appropriately by restricting closures.
