Former Vice President Joe Biden, in theory, should have a very simple campaign strategy: promise Americans that everything is going to return to normal. All he really has to do to win is present himself as a the moderate option in a crowd of crazy radicals.
Well, this strategy may be harder to follow through with than Biden thought. Sure, he has all the name recognition that a presidential candidate could ask for — but that could be the thing that ends up bringing him down.
In 2016, then-candidate Donald Trump ran not just as a Republican, but as a change candidate. He was just as much at odds with the establishment of his own party as he was with his opposition — and that’s how he won. He was easily able to present himself as a no-nonsense outsider, because that’s exactly what he was. Trump had never before ran for office, and took just as many jabs at his Republican rivals as he did at his Democratic opponents.
Joe Biden, simply put, can’t do this. He’s as much of an outsider as any career politician in Washington. A “return to normalcy” campaign is really a return to elitism.
