Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders is marketing himself as the champion of the downtrodden — a hero of the working class. As this image points out though, a solid chunk of his supporters are anything but that.
Sanders has been in politics for a while, but he really only became a household name when he ran for president in 2016. Running as a far-left alternative to Hillary Clinton and the rest of the Democratic Party, the 77-year-old socialist became an icon for progressive millennials. Even with more intersectional candidates to choose from, Bernie established credibility by offering to make college free, healthcare free, and seemingly everything else free.
Going into 2020, Bernie isn’t exactly a fringe candidate anymore. With just about every other Democrat running in effect trying to out-left the Vermont senator, it’s fair to call Bernie the standard bearer of his party.
Obviously, the Democrats have moved so far to the left that they are no longer afraid to run an actual socialist. But let’s not forget who Bernie’s true masters are. Sure, he may not be on the payroll of corporations like Goldman Sachs the same way Hillary Clinton was, but Bernie has other people to answer to in order to stay relevant. Sadly, they look a lot like the kid in this picture.
