The political crisis in Venezuela is teaching Americans a lesson we all should have learned in 1991 — socialism destroys economies, and destroyed economies turn countries into ruin.
Well, some of us did learn that lesson. After all, the fall of the Soviet Union is certainly not the only example of a communist utopia falling apart. This is playing out in real time in Venezuela, and other countries like Cuba are not too far behind.
Then again, there are those of us who simply refuse to learn this lesson. Progressive Americans remain convinced that socialism just hasn’t been implemented properly — a full century after the Russian Revolution toppled the Czarist regime and Vladimir Lenin took control of the country. These progressives point to welfare paradises like Norway and Sweden, ignoring the fact that both of those countries have almost no defense expenditures, and that both governments have been gradually ceding control to the private sector. In other words, neither Sweden nor Norway are socialist in any way.
We’ll just have to accept the fact that we’re going to hear this argument for the rest of time. After all, it just hasn’t been tried correctly, right?
