Thomas Sowell Nails it on Immigration and the Law

There are a plethora of fascinating minds to lend your ear to in the conservative commentariat, but few can articulate this worldview better than Thomas Sowell — as exemplified by this quote.

Immigration has been at the top of the American public’s docket since the mainstream media began zero-ing in on the fact that migrant children arriving on American soil illegally are separated from the adults they cross the border with. Despite the fact that Republicans including Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, House Speaker Paul Ryan, and even President Donald Trump himself have signaled a willingness to change the policy, Democrats have made it clear that they want to play political football instead.

It’s important to point out that this isn’t about being anti or pro-immigration. It’s about supporting the rule of law in this country. Clearly, the Democrats want to resolve this by simply granting blanket amnesty for everyone who makes it across the border. As Sowell points out in the quote here, this uniquely renders the rule of law moot.

It’s true that what’s happening at the border does not come without its complications. Perhaps there is an appropriate level of reform needed to our immigration system. However, we must remember that our instinct to help those around us cannot replace the rule of law.
