We’re not usually in the business of telling progressives how to score political points with the American public, but we almost feel bad at this point. So, we’ll just come out and say it — if you’re against President Trump’s border wall, throwing a sign on your own wall probably isn’t the best way to express that.
But, let’s talk about this for a minute: why is that wall there in the first place? Perhaps this homeowner simply wants to keep trespassers off of his property. Maybe he or she has young children, and doesn’t want strangers interacting with them. OR — maybe his neighbor is of a different ethnic heritage and the homeowner is actually just a violent racist. Yeah, that seems likely.
It’s been said a bunch of times at this point, but it’s worth repeating: we don’t build walls because we have everyone outside. We build walls because we love what’s inside. We want to protect low-income workers from being priced out of their jobs by cheap foreign labor. We want women and children to walk around safely without unvetted criminals sharing the streets with them. Most of all, we want to enforce the simple idea that our country begins with this border, and that we are a sovereign nation.
