Recently, Facts Not Memes broke down several images created by leftist content creators that erroneously (and disgustingly) drew comparisons between militant liberal mobs and the heroic U.S. Armed Forces during World War II.
The logic was loose at best, and blatantly offensive at worst — that by fighting the actual Nazis (as in, Adolf Hitler’s military), the brave men and women who risked their lives to liberate Europe were fighting the same battle as the overtly violent Antifa protesters who clashed with neo-Nazis in Charlottesville.
Thankfully, this image is far less insulting to those heroes of America’s past. But, it’s still way off base.
Admittedly, this breakdown requires a little bit of nerding out.
The Rebel Alliance, the protagonists in George Lucas’ original Star Wars trilogy, could not be more different than the radicals throwing bricks at Klansmen.
For one, the rebels in the legendary sci-fi franchise were fighting against authoritarianism in favor of a more representative form of government (exemplified by “the Republic” in the modern sequel series). In a deleted scene from A New Hope, Luke and his friend Biggs actually discuss the Empire’s economic policies, which included the nationalization of several trading routes.
In other words, the Empire wasn’t exactly right-wing — nationalizing trade is about as anti-capitalist as it gets.
