Remember when the Democratic Party was the party of the “working man?”
Considering that their policies consistently lead to high unemployment, higher taxes (for everyone), lower home ownership rates, and an ultimately higher cost of living — we don’t either. But let’s pretend that there was some truth to the rabid unionists of the mid-20th century.
If there’s nothing else we can say about the New Deal-era Democrats, it’s that they were — at least on the surface — pro-America. President Franklin Roosevelt’s administration was rife with corruption, and his disastrous central economic planning lengthened the Great Depression. But, the alphabet agencies were in fact created with the American worker in mind — at least that’s the theory. There was still an “America First” messaging here.
Fast-forward to 2019, and the semblance of “America First” has evaporated from the Democratic Party’s ranks. They don’t even pretend to appreciate the United States as an exceptional force on the world stage any more. They want America to be just like every other country. Exceptionalism is supremacy, and supremacy is bad.
Every single Democrat running for president right now is promising to provide taxpayer-funded healthcare to illegal immigrants at exactly no cost. If this isn’t indicative of a massive and destructive shift in priorities, we don’t know what is.
