Facebook page Occupy Democrats is up to their usual divisiveness with this post, which claims that Native Americans in the United States are just as systematically oppressed as they have ever been.
The image references the crucial role Native American soldiers played during World War II, particularly in the Pacific theater. Needing an impossible-to-break code to confuse the hostile Japanese Empire, the U.S. Armed Forces used the Navajo language to communicate tactical information. The code was never cracked.
Instead of honoring this heroic contribution to American history, the meme suggests that the United States has never made any reprimands for how the country’s first tribes were treated in the past.
Quick reminder: Native Americans are not required to pay taxes, and are exempt from many other federal laws. The infamous casino exception allows these tribes to make a fortune while it remains illegal just about everywhere else in the country.
Obviously, stipulations like this don’t erase the conflicts in the past — but to suggest there has been no effort to make amends whatsoever is simply asinine.
