There has been a lot of misinformation regarding President Donald Trump’s position on his predecessor’s executive amnesty, and this political cartoon demonstrates just about all of it.
To be fair, it’s actually easy to understand how liberals are misinterpreting this. After all, the president was highly critical of former President Obama’s Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals, and even more critical of his opponents that supported it — especially Jeb Bush.
However, the president has almost pulled a complete one-eighty on this since taking office.
DACA, like most executive orders, was never meant to last forever. However, by getting Congress involved, that’s exactly what might happen.
The truth is that there is a lot of consensus already between ranking Democratic and Republican lawmakers on this issue, especially in the Senate. Senators Linsey Graham and John McCain, for example, have both signaled that they would vote to make DACA permanent.
Ironically, by handing DACA over to Congress, Trump has done the Democratic left a huge favor. However, this also gives traditional conservatives a chance to draft real immigration reform, and pair it with the legislation.
