Comedy Central is perhaps more popular with America’s left-leaning news consumers than actual hard news channels, and that’s not a good thing.
The meme to the left perfectly illustrates this near hero-worship of Comedy Central, the former home of liberal staples such as John Stewart and Stephen Colbert. These programs have led to the rise of similar shows on other networks, such as Jon Oliver’s Last Week Tonight on HBO.
To be fair, these programs are perfectly harmless commentary productions that happen to place a heavy emphasis on humor. The harm here is how Comedy Central markets these shows as actual news programs.
Even from a commentary perspective, which by definition permits the respective hosts to be as biased as they wish, they rely entirely on their comedic value to reach their audiences.
Let’s face it – Jon Stewart’s program would have bombed if the entire production was comprised of think tank statistics. In the end, all such programs really do is convince impressionable young minds that their predisposed beliefs must be true.
