The level of projection here is borderline disturbing…
As Republicans struggle with getting at least one piece of major legislation passed to complete President Trump’s first year in office, Democrats in the media and on Capitol Hill are doing everything they can to reframe the argument in their favor.
In this cartoon, Republicans are characterized as they typically are in the leftist media as the Monopoly guy holding a gun to the American taxpayer — suggesting that by taking less of their money, conservatives are committing an act of theft.
In what world does this make even the least bit of sense?
The whole idea behind tax cuts is to take less of a taxpayer’s money — ideally while subsequently downsizing the size and scope of the federal government. After all, a smaller government by definition requires less revenue to operate. Moral and functional arguments are both at play here. As libertarians love to say, “taxation is theft” in one way or another. The very least a moral government can do is make due with the least amount of theft possible.
The tax reform plan circulating Congress is definitely not perfect, but it simplifies an impossibly complicated tax code while reducing the rates for countless Americans. This saves taxpayers money not only by requiring them to fork up less of their income, but also by reducing their reliance on accountants just to pay their taxes in the first place.
