House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries just told you exactly what Democrats think of you, and no, it wasn't "let's heal the nation" or "we need to come together." Speaking at the Center for American Progress IDEAS Conference with John Podesta moderating, Jeffries declared: "Either MAGA extremists are going to break the country, or we're going to break them, and our goal is to break them."
Feel the unity yet?
But he wasn't done. Jeffries kept going, in case anyone thought he was speaking metaphorically. "We have to beat them electorally, and then we have to break their spirit," the top House Democrat said. Not beat them at the ballot box and move on. Not win on policy. Break their spirit. That's the actual leader of the House Democratic caucus talking about 77 million Americans who voted for President Trump.
Let that sink in. The man who wants to be Speaker of the House doesn't just want to defeat you — he wants to crush your will to participate in your own democracy.
As reported by 100 Percent Fed Up, the reaction was swift and fierce. Edgar Barrios, spokesperson for House Speaker Mike Johnson, responded: "Hakeem Jeffries says he wants to 'BREAK the spirit' of 77 million AMERICANS." Not exactly the kind of quote you can walk back with a "taken out of context" press release.
RNC Chairman Joe Gruters piled on with the obvious: "The majority of Americans voted for President Trump in 2024." That's the part Jeffries keeps forgetting. MAGA isn't some fringe movement hiding in a basement. It's the majority. You don't "break the spirit" of the majority — they break yours. Ask Hillary Clinton how that worked out.
This is the Democratic Party in the 120th Congress with the 2026 midterms approaching. They're not running on healthcare. They're not running on the economy. They're running on revenge against the people who voted wrong.
Senator Mike Lee flagged the comments as well, and he's right to. When a party leader openly talks about breaking the spirit of the opposition's voters — not their candidates, not their policies, but the actual human beings who pulled the lever — that's not politics. That's something darker.
We've watched Democrats call us deplorables, threats to democracy, domestic extremists, and everything in between. But "break their spirit" is a new level. It's an admission that the goal isn't persuasion. It isn't governance. It's domination.
Hakeem Jeffries just handed every Republican campaign in America a bumper sticker for 2026. Good luck running on "we want to break you" in swing districts, pal.
