It’s a truth worth repeating a thousand times, and a thousand times again the next day: being offended by free speech is not the same as actively trying to abolish it.
You would think that followers of the Democratic Party, a political faction that bills itself as the arbiter of free expression, would understand this difference — and many do. But this is not the case for the admins over at the infamous Facebook page The Other 98%.
In this image, the content creator attempts to slam the right for their alleged lukewarm endorsement for Nazi rallies and their criticism for former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Of course, no credible conservative effectively called for Kaepernick’s decision to kneel during the national anthem to be declared illegal. The same cannot be said for the left’s war on hate speech.
Like it or not, hate speech which excludes any credible threats to life or property is perfectly protected by every interpretation of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. What isn’t protected are the consequences of said speech.
Kaepernick was representing his employer when he famously refused to stand for the national anthem in protest against police brutality against black Americans. Noting the substantial decline in ratings as a result of this demonstration, the second-string quarterback is now jobless.
Likewise, neo-Nazis and their sympathizers enjoy almost no support from anyone with even a vague sense of historical knowledge. It’s not uncommon for individuals outed as white supremacists to be fired from their jobs and socially ostracized.
There’s a reason David Duke keeps running for political office, and never gets past a primary.
